Duma Tau Camp – A Gem in Botswana
Duma Tau, meaning ‘roar of the lion’ is a luxury tented camp situated in northern Botswana’s Linyanti Concession.
I had the privilege of working as the manager of this beautiful camp for a couple of years.
Botswana is without a doubt one of the premier safari destinations in Africa, most famous for the Okavango Delta, one of the 7 natural wonders of Africa. Not many people consider the Linyanti as part of their itinerary, and are truly missing out on an incredible destination that can still be combined with a few of the camps in the Okavango Delta.
The spectacular view over Osprey lagoon, which feeds into the Savute channel, immediately takes your breath away the moment you arrive at Duma Tau. This lagoon is very well known for having massive numbers of Elephants swimming across during the drier months of the year from July to November.
One of my favorite areas of Duma Tau and something that is totally unique, is the very popular floating fire deck. Anchored some way into Osprey Lagoon, the floating fire deck has a floating walk way which takes you to the fire pit and is one of the best places to watch the sun go down, as well as seeing the Milky Way in the evenings whilst enjoying a cold beverage of your choice.
Apart from the luxurious, eco-friendly accommodation which is 100% solar powered, the area around Duma Tau not only offers a variety of activities for you, but the game viewing in general is some of the best that you can find anywhere in Africa.
From morning, afternoon and night game drives conducted in open safari vehicles, to experiencing the smaller aspects of life on a walking safari, to then experience the fascinating water ways and lagoons which come from the Kwando River and flow into the Savute channel, the variety of activities make the experience interesting and diverse. Along with the variety of activities on offer, you can also experience the Linyanti from the air in a helicopter, which gives you a unique perspective on this amazing concession.
Another memorable experience that is an absolute must when you visit Duma Tau is the “Million Star experience” where you overnight at a luxurious hide overlooking Zimbadianja Lagoon. Waking up in the morning next to a pod of hippo and listening to the amazing dawn chorus is something that will most certainly stay with you forever.
The Linyanti and particularly the floodplains close to Duma Tau is known for delivering fantastic predator sightings, especially of leopard and African wild dogs.
So many fond memories come to mind from our time at Duma Tau, and it has without a doubt become one of my favorite destinations in Africa.
One of the most memorable sighting during the time I worked at Duma Tau, was sitting at an elephant carcass (it died from natural causes), and witnessing a bush pig feeding off it. I remember being in absolute disbelief at what was happening in front of me, a sighting that I will most likely never ever have again!
Till next time…
