All about the Best of South Luangwa.

At the tail-end of the Great Rift Valley lies one of Africa’s most untouched, purest wilderness eco-systems. South Luangwa National Park is considered one of Africa’s last great safari parks & has the credentials to prove it. Wild Eye hosts several safaris to the pristine piece of land annually, and such a South Luangwa Photo Safari is something every avid nature lover & wildlife photographer should experience.

Snaking through the Eastern regions of the great park is the Luangwa River, without doubt the park’s life-blood. It is considered to be the purest most untouched river in Africa.

South Luangwa is synonymous with incredible wildlife, beautiful meandering rivers and breathtaking scenery. Many ox-bow lakes remind us of where the river once flowed. Now they fill up annually & provide water for the park’s animals throughout the year. They also provide the perfect cover for a rare species of bird, the Pel’s Fishing Owl – something you’ll be fortunate to see on one of our South Luangwa Photo Safaris.

The variety in habitat and year-round water availability creates an environment suited to a vast abundance of animal species. Leopard, lion, hyena and African wild dog all occur in large numbers. South Luangwa also boasts the densest leopard population in Africa. These top predators are a delight amongst photographers and we aim to spend as much time in their company as possible, both in daylight and under the cover of darkness.

The open plains teem with general game such a zebra, giraffe, puku and impala. Elephants are hardly ever out of sight and the rivers are filled with hippo and crocodile. In fact, the densest population of hippo’s in Africa can be found in the Luangwa River.

This National Park deserves all of the credit is has been given. It will provide visitors of all kinds with the experience of a lifetime. This South Luangwa Photo Safari will transport you back to the way Africa was many years ago, a safari that’s not only exhilarating, but also pure.

  1. Day 1 Arrival

Fly into Lusaka where we will overnight the night before the safari starts (19thOctober) at the Protea Hotel.  Transfers to and from the airport have been arranged.

  2. Day 2 Travel Day/Safari

After an early breakfast at the Protea Hotel we will be transferred by road to Lusaka airport for our chartered flight into Mfuwe.  The flight to Mfuwe is about one hour.  At Mfuwe Airport we will met by one of the Guides from Nsefu Camp and transferred by road to Nsefu Camp.  The road transfer is about 2 hours in total and is a fascinating drive, passing through local villages, game management areas and eventually into South Luangwa National Park.  We will arrive at Nsefu Camp in time to unpack, settle in and enjoy a delicious meal before heading out on our first afternoon safari.  Depending on what we see on safari we should return back to Nsefu Camp after dark where a delicious home cooked meal will be waiting for us.

  3. Day 3 Safari

An early morning start to enjoy a cup of coffee overlooking the Luangwa River before we head out on our morning safari.  The private Nsefu sector is rich in wildlife and has high density of Leopards which will be one of our focusses during our time here.  Depending on animal movements we will potentially explore the Riverine thickets, an area that provides perfect cover for Leopards.  Depending on wildlife, we should return to Camp around 10:00 in time for another delicious cooked meal.  The time during the day can be used to either sit back and relax and enjoy the stunning view of the Luangwa River, or work through Lightroom with your Wild Eye Guide.  We will head out again around 15:30 to follow up from the mornings sightings in search of some more incredible photographic opportunities.  We should return back to Camp around 19:30 in time for dinner under the African skies.

  4. Day 4 Safari

We will head out this morning to explore some of the open plains around Nsefu.  This area is known for good Lion numbers and during the dry season, they will often target large mammal species such as Hippo and Buffalo. Return to Camp for brunch around 10:00. Your Wild Eye Guide will be available for any Lightroom questions you might have.  The afternoon we will focus on the hide situated on the banks of the Luangwa River which faces a colony of Carmine Bee Eaters.  After a traditional sundowner watching the sun set over the Luangwa River, we will continue on a night drive back to Camp.

  5. Day 5 Travel Day/Safari

Our last morning at Nsfeu Camp as we make our way to Kaingo Camp.  We will do a normal game drive in the morning and then head down to the Luangwa River where we will cross over to Kaingo.  We will arrive at Kaingo in time for lunch and an introduction to the Camp.  The afternoon we will head out around 15:30 to explore the predator rich Kaingo area, returning back to Camp around 19;30 for dinner.

  6. Day 6 Safari

Start the day off early and head out at sunrise following up on any predator activitity from the night before.  Between high profile sightings there is also great birdlife this time of the year as well as good general game.  We’ll return to Camp in time for a mouth watering brunch.  Between game drives we have a few options which include making use 4 different hides available, having a lightroom session or relaxing in the comfort of your room.  In the afternoon, depending on animal movement we will either follow up on sightings from the morning or make use of the hides available to us.  Return to Camp around 19:30 for a dinner and drink around the fire.

  7. Day 7 Safari

This morning we will head to the Hippo hide to make use of the first light available to us.  These hippos will have just returned from their evening graze and are usually very active during the early morning hours.  The Hide is almost at eye level and will no doubt provide us with amazing photographic opportunities.  We will return to Camp around 09:30 where a hearty breakfast will be waiting for us. Mid day is at your disposal, your Wild Eye Guide will always be available for any Lightroom questions or you can relax in your beautiful room with some peace and quiet.  The afternoon we will be on the search for Leopard and other predators, which this area is very well known for.

  8. Day 8 Safari

Our last full day at Kaingo will be determined by what we have seen and images we have taken.  This day is open to either go in search of more Predators or make use of the various hides at our disposal.

  9. Day 9 Travel Day/Safari

We will transfer from Kaingo to Mfuwe lodge by road, still doing some game viewing along the way.  The transfer will take about 2-3 hours and we should arrive at Mfuwe around brunch time. Mfuwe is very well known for the Elephants passing through the reception area of the lodge which will hopefully be another highlight of this amazing safari.  Our afternoon safari will start around 15:30 and we explore the beauty of Mfuwe, an area once again very different to Nsefu and Kaingo.  You will also enjoy a bit of luxury at Mfuwe as our last camp with both air conditioning and WIFI available.

  10. Day 10 Safari

Start off the morning bright and early to explore more of Mfuwe.  Although there is a bit more vehicle activity than the wilderness areas of Nsefu and Kaingo, there is a very healthy population of wildlife in the Mfuwe area, most of which are extremely relaxed with the presence of vehicles.  There are loads of photographic opportunities in this area and we will make sure to maximise the potential.

  11. Day 11 Safari

Our last full day of our amazing South Luangwa Safari we will recap on what we have seen and photographed and focus on whichever species we would like to see and photograph more of.  Your Wild Eye Guide will also be available to help you with the processing of any of your images or if you have any other questions revolving around post processing. We will enjoy our last dinner under the African starts and share some laughs and amazing memories from the past 11 days.

  12. Day 12 Departure

Depending on the flight arrangements from the night before we will either head out on safari early in the morning and proceed straight to Mfuwe Airport which is about a 40 min drive or return to Camp for a quick freshen up before departing to the Airport.  The flight from Mfuwe back to Lusaka is about an hour and a half’s flight and will signal the end of an incredible safari experience in one of the wildest areas left in Africa.
