All about the Ethiopia – Wildlife and Indigenous Culture.

Overview

A combination of some of Ethiopia’s most iconic highlights. A mixture of its unparallel endemism of wildlife and what are arguably some of the most bizarre tribes of Africa and easily what could be the richest history of any African country. This safari is guaranteed showcase the best of Ethiopian history, wildlife and culture.

We start the safari of with a quick stop in Addis Abba and a visit to the National Museum where we can witness the famous hominid fossil remains of “Lucy”. The museum itself is a good summary and introduction of your visit to historical Ethiopia. The following day we travel by air to Lalibela and visit its famous rock churches that were dug into rock some 850 years ago. A local sight guide will help us here with interpreting the rich history within these rock walls.

After Lalibela we travel by air and road to reach the breathtaking Simien Mountains. Its cliffs crawling with the beautiful gelada baboon. These troops can reach enormous numbers of up to 800 in a troop. Almost completely habituated to humans one can stroll through these families freely observing the antics and photographing these fascinating animals. We will also be heading toward the higher peaks in search of the Walya Ibex. With only 500 left in the wild and all 500 are in this region. it is truly a privilege to witness these magnificent antelope.

After the Simien mountains we have a short stop in Gondar where we a have a short tour of this historic city, the Castles and royal enclosers within. We will continue by air from here to the Omo valley. Known for its various tribes, their strange rituals and beautifully decorated bodies. Quality time will be spent with the Mursi, Turmi, Bodi, Hamer and Karo tribes. Rounding off this combination of the best of Ethiopia.

  1. Day 1 Arrival

    Arrive at Bole international airport and meet our representative and transfer to your hotel.

    half day city tour of Addis Ababa  including the National Museumthat comprises of many archaeological and historical findings including the famous complete hominid fossil remain of ‘Lucy’ locally known as ‘Dinknesh’ meaning wonderful. A visit to Merkato that is the largest open-air market in Africa.

  2. Day 2 : Fly to Lalibela

    After breakfast, transfer to the airport and fly to Lalibela. Lalibela is arguably one of the most important religious and historical sites in all of Africa and the entire Christian world. Visit the first of the 11 renowned rock churches in this area. Overnight Maribela Hotel or similar.

  3. Day 3 Lalibela

    After breakfast, visit the Second group of the churches representing the heavenly Jerusalem..

    In the afternoon, visit a local household in Lalibela to experience Ethiopia’s unique traditional cuisine and experience Ethiopian cooking traditions with full demonstration.

  4. Day 4 Fly to Gondar and drive to Simien

    After breakfast, transfer to the airport and fly to Gondar. On arrival meet your drivers and head to Sankaber- the headquarters of Simien Mountains National Park. Spend the afternoon walking near your lodge to spot troops of the endemic Gelada baboon and appreciate the breath-taking scenery highlight of our Ethiopian adventure. Overnight Simien lodge.

  5. Day 5 Simien Mountains

    The next two days will be spent exploring and photographing the legendary Simien Mountains and its unique inhabitants. The landscape in the area is remarkably picturesque with panoramic vistas overlooking the deep gorges of the Escarpment. Our main interest will be the endemic Gelada baboon, Walya Ibex, and the great scenery. Amidst beautiful alpine meadows punctuated with Giant Lobelias and flowering “red hot pokers” (Kniphofia’s), we will find ourselves surrounded by massive troops of extremely well habituated and photogenic Gelada Baboons. Deeper in the park, we will scan the steepest cliffs and highest peaks for the endemic Walia Ibex, an impressive member of the goat family that has been seen by very few wildlife enthusiasts. The mountains are also home to 16 bird species endemic to Eritrea and/or Ethiopia as well as an important population of the rare and beautiful Bearded Vulture that can frequently be seen gliding along the cliffs here.

  6. Day 6 Simien Mountains

  8. Day 8 Drive to Gondar

    After breakfast, drive back to Gondar visiting he former Jewish village en route. In the afternoon, exploring the Royal Enclosure and its buildings.  The fortress, which is surrounded by a 300-foot-long wall, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The oldest and most impressive structure in the compound is the two-story palace of Emperor Fasilidas, built of solid basalt stones. Other royal buildings of interest include the library of Emperor Yohannes I, the House of Song where royal ceremonies took place, the elegant reception and banquet hall of Emperor Bakaffa, and the palace of the king’s wife. Also visit the nearby bath of King Fasiledes, where modern-day Timkat ceremonies are performed.  Finally, view the Church of DebreBirhan Selassie, an imposing structure with brightly colored ceilings.

  9. Day 9 Fly to Jinka via Addis Ababa

    After breakfast, transfer to the airport and fly back to Addis Ababa and connect to your Jinka flight. On arrival in Jinka, meet your driver and transfer to hotel for checkin.

    In the afternoon, visit the Ari village in Jinka.

  10. Day 10 Visit Mursi and Bodi tribes

    After breakfast, leave Jinka and drive to Mursi village to visit and appreciate the very attractive culture of Mursi tribe. They are renowned for the strange custom followed by their women who on reaching maturity, have their lower lips slit and circular disks inserted.

    We will drive deeper and visit the bodi tribe in their village. The life of Bodi tribe is completely dependent on their livestock. Slim might be “ the in” elsewhere but for Ethiopia’s Bodi or Me’en people, bigger is always better. The tribe, which lives in a remote corner of Ethiopia’s Omo Valley, is home to an unusual ritual which sees young men gorge on cow’s blood and milk in a bid to be crowned the fattest man.Overnight Eco Omo lodge.

  11. Day 11 Drive to Turmi

    After breakfastyou drive to Turmi, the village of the Hamer people whose women are noted for their typical hairdressing, and leather skirts.Hamers have remarkable hairstyles made from ochre, water, and binding resin.

  12. Day 12 : Excursion to Karo village

    In the morning, you will make an excursion trip to Murulle – the village of Karo people, who are the tribe with the least in number of members, and known for their body paintings they indulge before important ceremonies. The most striking thing about Karo people’s symbolic and ornamental expressions is the painted body and face decorations. Overnight Buska Lodge.
