All about the Ethiopia – Wildlife and Indigenous Culture.

Overview

A combination of some of Ethiopia’s most iconic highlights. A mixture of its unparallel endemism of wildlife and what are arguably some of the most bizarre tribes of Africa and easily what could be the richest history of any African country. This safari is guaranteed showcase the best of Ethiopian history, wildlife and culture.

We start the safari of with a quick stop in Addis Abba and a visit to the National Museum where we can witness the famous hominid fossil remains of “Lucy”. The museum itself is a good summary and introduction of your visit to historical Ethiopia. The following day we travel by air to Lalibela and visit its famous rock churches that were dug into rock some 850 years ago. A local sight guide will help us here with interpreting the rich history within these rock walls.

After Lalibela we travel by air and road to reach the breathtaking Simien Mountains with a brief stop in Gondar to see the iconic Royal Enclosures. Its cliffs crawling with the beautiful gelada baboon. These troops can reach enormous numbers of up to 800 in a troop. Almost completely habituated to humans one can stroll through these families freely observing the antics and photographing these fascinating animals. We will also be heading toward the higher peaks in search of the Walya Ibex. With only 500 left in the wild and all 500 are in this region. it is truly a privilege to witness these magnificent antelope.

After the Simien mountains We will continue by air to the Omo Valley via Jinka. A 4 hour drive for Jinka later and we arrive at the heaven that is Lales Camp on the banks of the Omo River itself. Known for its various tribes, their strange rituals and beautifully decorated bodies. Quality time will be spent with the Mursi, Turmi, Surmi, Hamer and Karo tribes. Rounding off this combination of the best of Ethiopia.

  1. Day 1 Arrival

    Arrive in Addis. Meet and greet by our airport representative. Your private guide and driver will take you to the Golden Tulip hotel for a check in.A city tour that includes (Based on guests Addis arrival time):A visit to National Museum, Ethnographic Museum, Cathedral Churches,Merkato. Unity park and Evening Jazz at Fendeka

  2. Day 2 : Fly to Lalibela

    Fly to Lalibela. (0810/1030) It is a 40-minute drive from the Lalibela Airport to Mezena Lodge. The lodge is situated   remarkably afforested areacompounded with luxuriant trees and savannah grasses, On this day you willbe visiting the first and the second cluster of Rock churches.

  3. Day 3 Lalibela

    On this day, after breakfast, you will explore the third cluster in Lalibela and drive out to cave church (YemrehanaCristos). It is an hour drive out of town to access the cave church and takes a further 20 minutes to walk up to church. It is the most ornately decorated church in Lalibela and well worth the journey.

  4. Day 4 Fly to Gondar and drive to Simien

    Fly to Gondar.1320/1350.

    Arrive in Gondar, you will be transferred to the city (20 min) Sightseeing in Gondar. Have lunch at Four sister’s hotel and you will continue the journey to the Simien Mountains National Park. . This takes a further two hours as you climb to higher altitudes and the distant escarpment. Arrive at the lodge in the late.

  5. Day 5 Simien Mountains

    Breakfast and Drive into Park

    and spend time with Geladas (early morning best as they warm up on the cliff edges) and Ibex (quite a long drive to get to the Ibex, but well worth it).Full day exploration of Park with packed lunch. Return to Simien Lodge and have evening drinks with amazing views. The temperatures in the Park and especially at the lodge in the evenings will be cool and a warm fleece is recommended

  6. Day 6 Simien Mountains

    Breakfast and Drive into Park

  7. Day 7 Simien Mountains

    Leave SMNP at 0600. Drive back to Gondar. Catch Commercial flight to Addis (0910/10101) and connect to you Jinka flight.(1200/1330). Arrive Jinka met by your driver and guide. Drive to Lale’s camp (4hrs). Lale’s camp is a beautiful tented camp with en suite tents situated on the banks of the Omo River under a grove of Mahogany and Fig trees. Afternoon spent with Kara tribe at body painting ceremony. Body painting is typical of a social occasion for the Kara.

  8. Day 8 Drive to Gondar

    Morning walk in the village of Dus. After breakfast at Lale’s camp boat up river to Mago National Park and camp with Mursi villagers.Approximately 3 hours by boat to one of the more remote places in Ethiopia. TheMursi walk down to the river from their villages in the distant hills. They will trade for coffee and millet. The Mursi are renowned for their body scarification and lip plates. An evening spent with them in the remote Africanbush is something to be treasured.

  9. Day 9 Fly to Jinka via Addis Ababa

    Morning wildlife walk in Mago National Park. Traveling about half an hour upstream from our overnight camp, we find some grassy plains to do a small morning walk with the possibility of seeing some wildlife. Return to Lale’s Camp for lunch. Early drive to the nearby Hamar villages (40 Mins) Spend the early afternoon with the Hamar and witness how their pastoralist lifestyles differ from the Kara and the Mursi Drive back to Lale’s Camp in the late afternoon and refresh and witness the Kara dance in the village of Dus.

  10. Day 10 Visit Mursi and Bodi tribes

    After an early breakfast will have a boat transfer to Kangaten village and continue driving to Omo National Park. (Approx. 4 hrs.) Arrive ONP and after settling and lunch you will drive through to smaller Suri villagers and spend time with them. The Suri are known for body painting, scarification and lip plates like the Mursi. It’s their decorative art in the form of headdresses that they were which are the most eye catching though.

     

  11. Day 11 Drive to Turmi

    Breakfast and early morning Game driving and searching for wildlife in the Omo National park before driving back to Lale’s Camp for Lunch. Afternoon boat cruise and stop on the West bank to visit a Nyangatom village. Back to Lale’s camp and evening spent at the camp with campfire and drinks.

  12. Day 12 Departure

    Leave camp after early breakfast. Drive back to Jinka airport to catch you flight back to Addis. Arrive Addis. Transfer to your hotel.
