All about the Jaguars of the Pantanal.

Overview

Tucked away within the largest wetland in the world, lies a hidden paradise few have ever laid eyes upon. The sheer beauty of this landscape is unlike anything you’ve seen before, and the animals inhabiting this wildlife haven are incredibly unique and many not found elsewhere.

None of the Pantanal’s inhabitants are as sought after as the elusive Jaguar, and this incredible Wild Eye Safari is designed to take you into the heart of the spotted cat’s homelands as we dedicate 7 days entirely for this purpose alone.

Finding & photographing Jaguars requires time & patience. We will spend entire days (apart from lunch breaks) in search of this striking cat, and stand a good chance of not only seeing them, but also of watching them on the move as they explore their territories and go out on the hunt. You’ve travelled all the way to see them, and we have dedicated nearly 8 days to focus solely on them and allowing you to capture an incredible portfolio of the Pantanal’s Jaguars.

There are several aspects that separate this safari from many other to the region.
Small groups in the company of a skilled photographic guide in attendance ensures no detail to attention is overlooked.
The Wild Eye guide/s will be on hand at all times, as well as our local expert guide Ricardo Viegas. In the company of these experts you’ll be sure to both get the images you’ve dreamed of, as well as learn more about this fascinating wilderness.
The fact that we get to spend 7 days searching for & photographing Jaguars is a fantastic feature of this safari. You’ve travelled all the way to this corner of the globe, and we aim to maximize the opportunity to see the Jaguars of the Pantanal at their very best!

If you’ve always wanted to explore this magnificent region, then this exciting adventure is for you!

Wild Eye will gladly assist with the booking of these flights as well as any accommodation before & after the safari experience.

  1. Day 1 Arrival

Arrive into Cuiaba where you’ll be met off your flight from Sao Paulo and transfered to the Gran Odara for the night. Meet with your tour leader and all the other guests here.

  2. Day 2 Travel Day

After an early breakfast depart by road for Piuval Lodge. The lodge is located at the top of the 145 km long Transpanteneiro Road & will be the one of two accommodations on this tour. On the first afternoon explore the region by car & search for nesting Hyacinth Macaws & other stunning birds. There’s also an area where cayman bask on the banks of a small river and these crocodilians allow you up close & personal for unique photographic opportunities. After the day’s activities head back to the lodge and enjoy dinner.

  3. Day 3 Travel Day/Search for Jaguars

Wake early and photograph the Pantaneiro cowboys as they gather the cattle and sheep and drive them out into the pastures for the day. There’s an exciting opportunity to photograph the cowboys at work, a great cultural experience and enjoyable feature of this tour.

Thereafter we depart for Porto Jofré & Hotel Pantanal Norté, our base for the next 8 days. We’ll enjoy a quick stop along the way at Mato Grosso Hotel. The drive time for the whole journey will be approximately 3.5 hours.

After arriving at Pantanal Norté we’ll be checked in, shown to our rooms and then depart for our first afternoon on the river in search of the mighty Jaguar.

  4. Day 4 Hotel Pantanal Norté

These will be full days at Hotel Pantanal Norté.

The day will start with a short breakfast well before dawn. We’ll depart the lodge at first light & go in search of Jaguars and everything else on offer within this watery wonder world. Although the focus on this tour will be the big cats, there will be much more on offer every day. Capybara & cayman are an ever present feature. There’s a good chance of seeing primates as we go as well as iguana’s and even anaconda. There’s the odd chance of seeing different deer species and tree-climbing porcupine, and even a very small chance of a puma.

We’ll head back to the lodge for lunch at 12pm, and depart again at 2pm. We generally get back to camp some time after sunset as it’s dangerous to be on the boat and on the river when it gets dark. Porto Jofré is not more than 20 minutes from prime jaguar viewing territory so you will be well situated on this tour. We prefer to use this camp as our base as the food it fantastic, staff courteous and to be on land (as opposed to a houseboat) means you get off the water everyday. There’s great bird viewing opportunities in camp for species as iconic as macaws, toucans and more. You can even go for a daily run to get the legs stretched (although you have to keep an eye out for jaguars around camp itself).
